EverGlitch

Building EverGlitch

EverGlitch is a magical adventure, puzzle game where the player finds themselves in control
of an unsuspecting NPC turned hero. The game has glitched giving the Evil Destructo greater powers,
the knowledge of the game itself, and the ability to manipulate the programming.

EverGlitch is a group project of 10+ team members. Built as culminative project
during the last 6 months of the Game Design and Development at Toronto Film School.

Built as a school project, EverGlitch is a vertical slice of a game designed by myself and my fellow classmates over the course of 6 months. The entire game was created from scratch, every art asset, program, and mechanic.

Game Design

As part of our program each student was required to pitch their own game. After pitches we voted as a group to select the game we wanted to build. The game I pitched is what ended up become EverGlitch. As a team we created a lengthy GDD that contained everything we wished. From there we cut and cut our assets down until we produced the end product.

Art Direction

The art for EverGlitch was created by the team of students, while I had no hand in making the models or textures, I was apart of the concepting. Collecting concept art from other sources that was later used as source material for the project.

Gameplay Mechanics

As a team we were able to create a wide range of different gameplay mechanics. The ones that I was primarily in charge of were the Laser/Mirror Puzzle, a classic from many games and movies, destructible crates, interactable chests, and interactable doors. The focus of my efforts mechanically were taken by the laser puzzle and polishing it to as near perfection as I could.

Narrative and Voice

Thankfully our program had access to another group of students from the acting program who were able to voice our characters and deliver narrative. One of my tasks was to create the script and general narrative, as well as facilitating the recording of the voice lines. The actors did an amazing job with their acting, reducing the workload for the rest of the team.

Challenges

EverGlitch was a new challenge in many ways. As first experience in a building a a fully polished game. Many of the challenges from this experience shared the root cause of miss-communication as well as time and skill limits. As this is a school project, all team members are still learning and growing thought the project, re-making assets with greater skill later in the project.

Throughout the project I was able to learn many lessons, from communication, origination, source control, development, game design, and so much more. The overall experience has been a welcome challenge and made me egger to be a part of a large team working on a full game.
